Call me crazy, but I LOVE the rain. If it’s raining at night I will sleep with my bedroom window wide open so I can listen to the rhythm of the rain, I’ll stare intently out the window at it, I love to walk in the woods when you can hear the rain hitting the leaves. I’ve just always found it very therapeutic. It might have something to do with me being a water bearing Aquarius or the hundreds of nights I spent sleeping at Nana’s house listening to the ocean, but regardless I am happy to wake up to the pouring rain. And don’t even get me started on thunder and lightening storms; the best!
So fortunately today was one of those rainy days and I found myself eager to sit next to an open window and get started on a new project. I wish I came up with this idea on my own because I love these things so much but I can’t take credit for this one. I came across a DIY lace tambourine from the HonestlyWTF blog a while ago and was waiting for the right occasion to make them and with a birthday party coming up this weekend I decided this was it.
For the past few months I have been looking after a good friend’s baby while they are at work and next week is sweet little Mila’s 1st birthday! When Mila hangs out at our house Mairead is full of giggles, and Mila is equally as fond of Mai. She is such a pleasant little girl and we really enjoy having her here. It’s also been a good eye opener as to what having two children would be like should we ever be so blessed to have another. But I can say Mairead is a great little helper to (as she calls her) “little sister Mimi.”
So with Mila’s first birthday coming up I knew I wanted to get her something music related but wanted to avoid the junky plastic instruments. Mairead has a few musical instruments scattered around the house and these have been Mila’s favorite activities when she comes to play. We’re often singing and dancing with the tambourine here so what better than to give a soon-to-be toddler a noisy tambourine of her own!
These tambourine’s turned out stunning! Seriously if you’re on my family/friend gift list and you are reading this, prepare to receive one of these from me! I just love them. You can find a step-by-step tutorial here of how to make the simple version of the tambourine. I embellished one to keep for myself with a little gypsy soul flare of my own. All I want to do now is wear long dresses and dance barefoot in the grass while playing my new tambourine 🙂 Oh look it’s raining again!
