Watermelon Grapefruit Detox Flush

July 20, 2017

Watermelon is one of those summertime essentials.  I think we all have memories of hot summer days spitting out seeds and juice dripping down our chins.  It’s definitely a favorite treat in our house, but I came to love watermelon for a whole new reason in the hours after giving birth to Mairead.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to go into detail about my birth story, it’s not for everyone’s ears anyway.  It was too early, dire and brought me the greatest gift I could have ever received.  Your body does just as many crazy things after that baby arrives as it does while it’s growing inside of you.

One thing I wasn’t prepared for was how bad you swell up afterward.  I’ll never forget the look on Aaron’s face when he asked me, “what’s going on with your legs?”  They were the size of tree trunks!  I thought I was delusional looking at my body in the mirror, it was the craziest looking thing and it had to go!!  Thankfully the lactation consultant was (to no surprise) one of those totally invasive in-your-face kinds of people and when she saw me she said (more like yelled) “WATERMELON!  Gorge on watermelon, gorge gorge gorge until you think you’re going to be sick!”  So when I got to the hospital cafeteria, I emptied the refrigerator of their watermelon supply and went to town.  And it worked!  I was back to my skinny jeans by the time it was time to leave the hospital.

I do try very hard to make healthy choices over being super skinny at this stage of the game.  But one thing I absolutely hate is that feeling of being bloated.  So I resorted back to those early days of becoming a mother and made up a tasty little treat to help with that.

Eating watermelon alone is still a way to flush out toxins, but adding the grapefruit (which is high in fiber) is a great way to help aid that flush.  Ginger has great detoxifying properties which is why I decided to add that in, not to mention it’s just all around so good for you!  I loved the flavor the ginger added to this drink.  Give it a try, let me know how you like it.  Enjoy!
