Do-It-Yourself

DIY Lavender Bath Bombs

July 20, 2016

Anyone who has ever come within a 100 foot radius of LUSH knows too well the captivating scents of their handmade cosmetics.  I love love love handmade natural soaps, lotions, oils; you name it, I’m all over it…or I should say it’s all over me.  The soapers (yes that’s a real term) at farmers markets are smiling ear to ear when they see me headed their way!

I’ve been making a conscious effort to make what I can for cosmetics and household cleaners in an attempt to save money and reduce some of the bajillion chemicals we come in contact with everyday.  I’ve been doing this for years but I do like to keep it simple with ingredients that are easily found in stores and are relatively affordable.  Okay, sometimes I will channel my inner hippy and go for the more peculiar home remedies but for the purpose of my blog I will keep it at a beginner level…for now!

With summer here most of us are baring more skin and as much as I hate myself for this now, I did not protect my skin very well, sometimes not at all when out in the sun in my teens and 20’s.  Now I’ve exploded in freckles and I am noticing little spots like Mr. Burns from The Simpson’s on my hands and it’s driving me crazy!  My dermatologist everything but bitch slapped me when I told him the years I had spent without sunblock in the sun and tanning beds in my younger days.  That’s definitely not the case anymore and I’m not only making the effort to protect my skin but also to correct the damage that’s already been done.  One way I do this is with lavender oil.  In one form or another I use lavender almost daily and I love everything about it.

Now before I go any further on essential oil’s I have to advise you; sometimes people misconceive the power of these ancient medicines.  If you don’t know how to properly use the oils and what they are used for you can seriously harm yourself.  Please take the time to learn how to use essential oils properly before you begin.

With that said, it’s time to get your hands dirty and throw together some homemade lavender bath bombs!  These smell wonderful and left my skin silky soft after a good soak in the tub.  My four year old even tried out a small piece in her bath and was asking everyone to rub her legs and feel how soft they are afterwards.  Ha!

Homemade Lavender Bath Bombs

Ingredients

1 cup citric acid
1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup coconut oil, melted
8-10 drops lavender oil
bath bomb mold or cupcake pan, (you may want to use liners, they are tricky to get out without cracking if not)
food coloring (optional…and no it did not stain the tub)

Directions

Combine all dry ingredients in a medium sized bowl and mix well

Add 5-8 drops of food coloring and stir.  It probably won’t dissolve at this point but that’s okay.

In a separate bowl mix together the coconut and lavender oils.

Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry, and stir as you go.

Using your hands mix everything well together until it begins to clump.  You will see the color emerging now.

Add the mixture to your mold and press firmly to pack it tight.  Leave to sit for 24 hours before attempting to remove from molds.

Draw yourself a bath, toss that fizzy bomb in there and relax!
