We Do the Monster Mash!

November 1, 2015

Happy Halloween everyone!  I know it’s been a crazy long time since I’ve shown my face around these parts but I needed to take a step back and readjust some things, but I am back and ready to roll!  And just in time for some Halloween fun!

Mwah ha ha

My little “Princess Anna” and big skeleton just left for trick-or-treating around the neighborhood and I am left here to hand out candy, which is fine by me!  **nibble nibble**  I have always loved Halloween (for obvious reasons) but also the traditions behind it.  My family was always really great about dressing up and playing fun pranks with the more tolerant neighbors and of course sharing a few ghost stories.

Another tradition which I miss dearly was the Feasting of Fuarag (pronounced foodick).  Dating before my time, this Gaelic Cape Breton tradition was to set a bowl of fuarag on the table on Halloween night and each person who came by would have a spoonful from each house.  You’ll almost laugh at the recipe it is so simple: a fine oatmeal that is browned in the oven for a few minutes to enhance the flavor sprinkled over a bowl of whipped cream.  (I apologize, I don’t have photos of this tonight).  Usually a few items were added into the mixture; a ring, a coin, a button and a thimble.  Depending on if you received one of these items in your spoonful would predict good or bad fortune for the coming year.  The ring represented marriage, the coin signified wealth, the button meant you would live a bachelor’s life, and the thimble meant you would become a spinster!  Such a fun folklore.

Draaanks!

Another sweet treat that always came out at Halloween was homemade fudge!  Now, I am incredibly picky about my fudge.  I hate soft fudge, which is the only kind I’ve ever seen for sale anywhere.  But my mom and my sister make the best hard fudge.  So naturally I got the recipe and made myself a pan to share with some other fudge lovers tonight.

The fudge!!

A few nibbles

Well the trick-or-treater traffic is getting heavy so I am going to sign off for now, I hope your evening is filled with lots of little ghosts and goblins.

Happy Halloween!
